While celebrating Earth Day, Arbor Day and Green Week on our blog, we are even more pleased to announce that the Clock Shadow Building in Milwaukee was named one of the American Institute of Architects Top Ten Green Projects of 2013. Located in the Walker’s Point Neighborhood, the project transformed an abandoned site into an eco-friendly treasure for the city.

The $7 million building was designed by Continuum Architects + Planners and the green project was spearheaded by Juli Kaufmann of Fix Development LLC. She pursued the “Living Building Challenge” standard for the building, which required it to generate its own energy and treat its own waste, among other qualifications.  Ultimately, developers hoped the building would be a commercially viable project, repeatable in other communities and meet the missions of economic improvement, social justice, environmental restoration and cultural celebration. Truly an ambitious goal, the project succeeded and is truly a one-of-a-kind building for the neighborhood.

The building currently houses four tenants: Clock Shadow Creamery, an artisan cheese factory; Purple Door Ice Cream, a premium neighborhood ice cream shop; CORE/El Centro, a non-profit natural healing center; and The Healing Center of Aurora Sinai Medical Center, serving the needs of sexual abuse survivors.

To read more about the project, read the Journal Sentinel review which deems it, “do-it-yourself urbanism.”
